Gavit’s Last Song – My Adventure in Sculpture Making

After the closure of Gavit Middle High School, a surprising discovery awaited us—a collection of old, worn-out band instruments. Intrigued by their potential, I decided to bring them home and transform my garage into an experimental workshop. It felt as though I had stumbled upon a wreckage of a marching band on my way back from school. Throughout the entire summer, I dedicated myself to the task of crafting a sculpture using these discarded instruments, delving into the world of art and exploring the intricacies of working with metal for the very first time.
Despite my inexperience, I eagerly embraced the challenge, envisioning the transformation of these broken relics into something meaningful and captivating. As I continued to experiment and refine my skills, I realized that this endeavor was more than just a personal project—it was an opportunity to pay homage to the legacy of Gavit Middle High School. Hence, the sculpture I was crafting became a symbol of the school’s final symphony, aptly titled “Gavit’s Last Song.”
Come November 2021, the fruit of my labor and passion will be unveiled at the dedication ceremony of the Donald E Gavit Auditorium in Morton High School. The unveiling of this sculpture will not only showcase my artistic journey but also serve as a tribute to the enduring spirit of Gavit Middle High School and the rich musical heritage it represented.
