Understanding Deliberation Through Simulation

The @stack Deliberation Game is a dynamic and engaging activity designed to foster critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills among high school students. By discussing a series of intriguing scenarios or questions, students in small teams navigate differing viewpoints, find common ground, and reach a consensus. The aim of the game isn’t simply to ‘win,’ but to cultivate respectful discussion, understand multiple perspectives, and enhance problem-solving skills.
Each round of the game involves a deliberation phase where students unpack the scenario or question, and then present their consensus to the class. The scoring system values the clarity of argument, use of evidence, consideration of different perspectives, collaboration, and successful consensus-building. These criteria not only make the game competitive and fun but also integrate the key skills required for constructive deliberation. Through @stack Deliberation, students learn to listen, reason, and articulate their thoughts effectively, preparing them for a world that values thoughtful communication and decision-making.
During the 23/24 school year I am going to start modifing this game to work with different issues in the world.
